When God told Solomon, "Ask what I shall give you," 2 Chronicles 1:10 says he asked for wisdom and knowledge in order that he may rule the people of God well.
He realized he was in the midst of God's will and was the instrument of fulfilling God's promise to David. Solomon was not selfish but asked for qualities that would help him do God's will.
The new testament tells us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything else will be added to us (see Matthew 6:23). This is what Solomon portrayed.
Help me, Lord, to have the heart that Solomon did in his request. Let me not be selfish but only concerned with Your will - Your kingdom and Your righteousness.
